From ancient to present times, Chinese jade has been cherished for its beauty and spiritual properties. Once abundant in Inner Mongolia and the Yangtze delta, it is mostly found today in the provinces of Xinjiang and Shaanxi. Burmese jadeite grew in popularity in post 1800 imperial China but the indigenous Chinese jade is nephrite, the softer yet tough variety.
Green jade is the most common gem, though nephrite can also be creamy white. Jadeite ranges from emerald green to blue, lavender, orange or brown. Preferred colours vary in different cultures but for many, green jade remains the favourite.
Green Jade and Chinese Charms
Jade has been used in China since the Neolithic era and archaeologists have unearthed objects dating back to 5000 BC. The first Chinese dictionary described jade as beautiful stones while Confucius praised its 11 virtues, said to reflect the human soul. Among them are loyalty, purity and intelligence while the strength of the gemstone symbolizes longevity. One ancient ruler was buried in a jade suit in an attempt to preserve his body.
In early times, Chinese jade was carved for weapons and tools. Later it was used for rituals, talismans, sacred objects, musical instruments, such as flutes and chimes, and under the Han dynasty for jewelry and charms. The Qing made jade ornaments, often in symbolic animal shapes, for instance winged lions or cicadas, such as those still found today.

Quality comes at a price and jade jewelry is no exception. When assessing the gemstones, one should first consider the colour. For green alone, experts can differentiate seven shades, most valued the imperial emerald green. Tone comes next and should appear pure and even. The gem should also have a smooth texture and the transparency of honey. It may be plain and polished or carved but beware, this can be used to hide blemishes.
Pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets or charms, jade jewelry comes in many shapes and is widely available across China, often in specialised markets. The famous Hong Kong jade market can’t compete with designer luxury but for an affordable and pretty souvenir, you can’t beat a simple bangle or a string of jade beads. Jade jewelry should be treated with care, kept away from dust, chemicals and harsh light.
Power of Jade, Birth Stone and Green Aura
Jade is the birth stone for March but its beneficial powers can be enjoyed by all who have faith. Its green colour may be regarded as a pure reflection of the green aura said to symbolise healing and hope. Calm, serenity and balance are among its main attributes, alongside compassion and wisdom.
Just like Tibetan turquoise, jade claims to be attuned to the heart chakra. By dispelling all anxiety and negative thoughts, it opens the way for spirituality and self-confidence. In Chinese culture, jade remains the gift of choice to express love or wish family and friends good luck and prosperity.
‘Gold has a value,’ says a Chinese proverb, ‘ but jade is invaluable.’ No one could sum it up better.
