Relaxation is easy to practise at home, the perfect tool to deal with stress while raising awareness to discover the inner self.

Relaxation can be achieved through the visualization technique, the decluttering of personal space and thoughtful use of the five senses. ‘No matter how busy you are,’ writes coach David Kundtz, ‘spend relaxing time today to give life to your true self.’ Great inventors, such as Thomas Edison, made top discoveries during quiet times, sitting by the fire.

Relaxing enhances the quality of life, relieves stress and is home therapy anyone can afford. The only requirement is time, just five minutes morning and night will make a difference. Better still, enjoy brief quiet moments throughout the day and now and then, set aside a full day to pamper yourself.

Top Relaxation Technique – Visualization

Everyone has the power to escape from bustle and stress through visualization. Close your eyes, recall an idyllic moment, maybe a picnic in a bluebell wood or a stroll by a lake, and imagine you are there, see the flowers, the birds, the placid water, the spring or autumn colours. If there isn’t such a place, create one, dream or reality, it doesn’t matter.

Picture yourself lying on the grass or sitting on a log, slow down the breath, in and out, and feel the body relax, toes, feet, ankles right up to neck, head and face. Keep the vision alive, enjoy your sanctuary then open your eyes, refreshed and ready to go.

No one can steal those precious moments. This special place will always be there and you can return any time, wherever you are.

Relaxing Through the Five Senses

All five senses can help induce a relaxing state since body and mind are closely connected. The sense of smell is easy to indulge, a rose on the dining table, lavender on the pillow, a sandalwood candle, a few drops of marjoram in the evening bath.

Taste? Next time you grab a hot chocolate or a cup of tea, don’t rush, enjoy it, feel the difference then likewise take time over food, appreciate a snack as much as a roast dinner. As for touch, why shy away? Whether it’s the warmth of human contact, or the softness of silk on the shoulders, it’s comforting and raises awareness of the surrounding world.

Invest in a few relaxation CDs, rainforest sounds, ocean waves, classical or aboriginal music, anything that appeals. Brush aside any distraction, just listen and absorb every sound as it flows freely through body and mind.

Declutter for Quality Life

Clearing clutter from the physical world makes it easier to clear the mind. If something hasn’t been used for over a year, it might as well go. There are plenty of charity shops and recycling options so it’s good for others as well as the self. Precious mementos can be kept but if your space is full of them, have only a few on show, put the rest in a box and ring the changes now and then.

Decluttering means being ruthless, no half way measures, no regrets, but a greater quality of life every day. One can see better, breathe better, relax and feel free. Even in difficult times, new energies begin to flow and uplift body and mind.
